Jun 11th, 2008 · Police Chief Cathy Lanier says the city's Trinidad neighborhood has seen a spike in homicides, mostly as a result of drive-by shootings from "rival crews" from outside the area. Last weekend, the police set up a checkpoint in the neighborhood to deter outsiders. The ACLU has protested the move, but Lanier says the checkpoint is working.

City officials have asked former independent counsel Kenneth Starr for input on an ordinance outlawing paparazzi stalking. Starr is dean of Pepperdine University's law school.
