Stunted Coral Highlights Troubling Ocean Trends

Jan 1st, 2009 · Coral in the Great Barrier Reef is showing significant signs of trouble, apparently the result of human activities. Scientists say one species of coral is growing much more slowly than it was 15 years ago. If current trends continue, this species of coral could stop growing altogether by the middle of the century. Scientists suspect that coral growth is being stunted by warmer ocean waters, as well as increasing acidity caused by carbon dioxide that's entering the ocean as a result of fossil fuel combustion.

Cool Sand Likely To Make Environmentalists Hot

Dec 16th, 2008 · Burning your feet on the very hot sand will soon be a thing of the past at one fancy hotel in Dubai. The world's first refrigerated beach is being built to protect the toes of clientele at the Palazzo Versace. There will be cooling pipes under the sand and wind blowers to produce a soft sea breeze. Not suprisingly, environmentalists are cool to the plan since Dubai's carbon footprint is already huge.

Turkey Dinner's Carbon Footprint

Nov 27th, 2008 · Most likely your turkey traveled by truck to get to your grocer. That trip probably started in a state like Minnesota or North Carolina, which are leading turkey producers. The cranberries are most likely from Wisconsin or Massachusetts, two states that produce more than 80 percent of the nation's cranberries. But the National Resources Defense Council suggests that many ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner can be found at local farmers markets.

Christmas Tree Lights Needs Pedal Power

Nov 26th, 2008 · A Christmas tree in Indiana is powered by alternative energy. The tree is outside Fort Wayne's Embassy Theatre. Its lights connect to a generator, powered by a stationary bike. If the power runs low, an alarm goes off, demanding more exercise. So the tree does nothing to contribute to global warming. Unless you count the carbon dioxide from people panting on the bike.
