The president said allowing the automakers to collapse would not be responsible.The ailing automakers will get $17.4 billion in loans. Bush said $13.4 billion will come from the $700 billion Wall Street bailout, and another $4 billion will come later.

Dec 12th, 2008 · Bipartisan talks on the $14 billion dollar auto rescue broke down in the Senate Thursday. The United Auto Workers rejected Republican demands that the union agree to steep wage cuts by 2009 to bring their pay into line with Japanese carmakers. The UAW refused to do so until the current contract expires in 2011. It's now up to President Bush to save GM and Chrysler.

Dec 2nd, 2008 · European carmakers will have to make a major cut in the amount of the global-warming gases produced by their vehicles. An agreement reached in Brussels Monday would give the manufacturers six years to reduce the emissions by nearly a fifth. The deal still needs approval by the European Parliament and all 27 European Union nations before becoming law.

They say they need the money to avoid an industry collapse. Two weeks ago, Congress sent them away empty-handed. Some lawmakers were angry the carmakers didn't have a plan for how they would spend the $25 billion in low interest loans.
Nov 21st, 2008 · Lawmakers considering a $25 billion aid package for the auto industry made getting a plan from carmakers a condition for getting the money. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid say if there's a viable plan, Congress might return to work in early next month for a vote.
