Oct 25th, 2008 · Last week, Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio and a team of 30 deputies and 30 volunteer posse members stormed Mesa's City Hall in a pre-dawn raid for illegal immigrants on the city cleaning crew. Meanwhile, a Latino neighborhood has had its police force taken away because they protested Arpaio's tactics.
Jul 7th, 2008 · Some sheriff deputies in Fairfield County, Ohio, are using golf carts to save gas and money. Deputies in the community of Bremen (pop. 1,200) use the electric carts to patrol some neighborhoods. Deputies say the carts are not only more efficient, they also improve community-policing efforts. Mike Thompson reports from member station WOSU.
May 22nd, 2008 · Days after a deadly shooting on a California Indian reservation, tensions are running high. Riverside County sheriff's deputies killed two members of the Soboba tribe in a shootout. Tribal officials say the deputies overreacted, but the sheriff's department says they were ambushed.
Jan 31st, 2008 · An unlikely suspect showed up in the arrest records for California's Sacramento County. Mickey Mouse was listed as a 47-year-old bartender from Anaheim, with aliases including Buzz Lightyear and Donnie Duck. It turns out the name was used to help deputies learning to use the sheriff's department's computer system.
Jan 11th, 2008 · The sheriff's department in Rockingham County, Va., joins nearly three dozen other police agencies that have signed onto a Homeland Security program that lets local officers hold people on immigration charges. Five deputies received five weeks of training that now lets them check the legal status of everyone booked at the county jail.
Sep 6th, 2007 · Police chiefs and sheriffs around the country are getting creative in their search for officers and deputies. In Anaheim, Calif., the police department has a long range plan. The Anaheim Police Department is teaching youngsters about policing in the hopes that they will want to be police officers when they grow up.
Apr 19th, 2007 · The pressure on Paul Wolfowitz to resign as World Bank president continues to grow. Last weekend, he received a rare public reprimand from the bank's leadership. Wednesday, one of the two deputies he appointed, New Zealand's Graeme Wheeler, asked him to resign. Today, the bank's governing officials are meeting to debate what action to take.
Feb 2nd, 2007 · A federal subsidy for forested counties has expired, causing a financial crisis in rural counties across the country. In rural Southern Oregon, counties are in deep financial trouble and will have to shut libraries, and lay off highway crews and sheriff's deputies. But Congress says the federal subsidy was never intended as a permanent solution.
