Landmark Gay Marriage Trial Opens In California

Jan 11th, 2010 · In San Francisco, a federal court trial on Proposition 8 — California's ban on gay marriage — begins. Voters approved the measure in November 2008, but gay rights groups say Proposition 8 is unconstitutional because it discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation and gender. It's the nation's first trial in any court on same-sex marriage and is expected to run two to three weeks. Melissa Block talks to NPR's Richard Gonzales.

Student With Intellectual Disability Wants Full College Experience

Dec 29th, 2009 · Like many kids with intellectual disabilities these days, Micah Fialka-Feldman went to his neighborhood high school in Michigan and graduated. Then he wanted to try college. Nearby Oakland University is one of many schools and community colleges that are setting up programs for students with intellectual disabilities. But it wouldn't let Fialka-Feldman live on campus so he sued, and a judge has ruled that he was discriminated against.

In China, AIDS Stigma Proves Difficult To Eliminate

Dec 1st, 2009 · China has managed to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS, but dealing with deep-rooted social stigma is proving much harder. A new report by the UNAIDS program says that 42 percent of AIDS sufferers in China have experienced discrimination because of their condition. World AIDS Day is held annually on Dec. 1 to raise awareness about the disease.
