Aug 26th, 2008 · During the past few weeks, large demonstrations have taken place in Kashmir. Muslims have taken to the streets to demand an end to Indian rule. Troops are enforcing a curfew, and shops, schools and businesses are closed.
Jul 20th, 2007 · Brian Leadbetter, curator of the Web site Snapped Shot, noticed one protester showing up in pictures from multiple demonstrations in Kashmir. That person, Shakeel Bhat, then became the basis for a caricature and photo-parodies.
Oct 20th, 2006 · A year after an earthquake rocked South Asia's Kashmir region, UNICEF is providing a unique kind of emergency relief: its School-in-a-Box program. The metal boxes contain classroom supplies for up to 80 students, and were widely distributed in Pakistan over the past year.
Apr 12th, 2006 · Six months after an earthquake devastated the Himalayan province of Kashmir, doctors on the Pakistani side are trying to rebuild a health care system for millions of homeless people. A group of Pakistani-American doctors helped with the immediate crisis last fall. Now they're trying to make sure that donors honor their pledges. Dec 21st, 2005 · Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld visits a U.S. military hospital in Pakistan treating victims of October's devastating earthquake in Kashmir. The visit came amid signs that the continuing U.S. relief efforts have dramatically improved the image of the United States in Pakistan.
Dec 4th, 2005 · On the CD Goulash!, Matt Haimovitz and his stringed instrument explore the music of Hungary, Romania and Transylvania. And he throws in a version of the rock band's "Kashmir" for good measure.
Nov 8th, 2005 · Officials from Pakistan and India have allowed aid for quake survivors to cross the heavily armed border in Kashmir. The border, known as the line of control, has been closed for more than 50 years. Since the earthquake, the neighboring countries are considering allowing civilian crossings.
Oct 26th, 2005 · The British aid agency Oxfam insists that the world's richest nations aren't doing enough to help victims of this month's devastating earthquake on the India-Pakistan border and the disputed region of Kashmir.
