Aug 26th, 2008 · The White House is pressing Russian leaders to ignore demands to recognize the breakaway regions of neighboring Georgia. The Russian parliament voted unanimously Monday to urge the Kremlin to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Those are the two regions at the heart of this month's conflict with Georgia. The move by Russia's lawmakers sparked jubilation in South Ossetia.
