Aug 28th, 2008 · Many people in South Ossetia hope their region will eventually rejoin with Russia. Earlier this week, Moscow formally recognized that breakaway region in Georgia as independent. Officials in South Ossetia are careful not to talk about unification. They say if they were to become part of Russia right away, the situation could backfire because it would look like annexation.
Aug 24th, 2008 · Although Russian troops have announced that they will partially withdraw from Georgian territory, they have left behind army checkpoints on Georgian territory. One South Ossetian town is on the ethnic fault line between Georgians and Ossetians.
Aug 22nd, 2008 · Leaders in South Ossetia have been organizing rallies to support their drive for independence. They say after independence from Georgia, they want their region to join Russia. Moscow says it will respect any decision the South Ossetians reach about their status.
