737 Bursts Into Flames, All Survive

Dec 21st, 2008 · Investigators are at Denver International Airport this morning, combing through the charred remains of a 737 that slid off a runway into a ravine last night and burst into flames. Denver fire department officials said the entire right side of the plane was destroyed by a fire so intense that melted plastic from the overhead compartments dripped onto the seats. Amazingly, every one of the 107 passengers and five crew members survived. Guest host Alison Stewart talks to Denver International Airport communications director Jeff Green about the accident.

Selling Recyclables Less Profitable

Dec 8th, 2008 · Prices are plummeting for recycled materials such as plastic and paper. Cities that used to earn revenues for those commodities are now paid a lot less, not at all — or have to pay to get them hauled away. Municipal transfer stations say they'll continue to recycle as long as it costs less to truck the stuff to recyclers, rather than to put it in landfills. Nancy Cohen reports for member station WNPR.

Salvation Army Tests Plastic At Red Kettles

Nov 19th, 2008 · You'll soon be seeing volunteers for The Salvation Army out with their red kettles, asking for donations. They've had trouble before because so many people only have plastic on hand. Now, five bell-ringers in El Paso County, Colo., will be the first to accept credit and debit cards along with coins and bills. So if you just never seem to have any spare change on hand — consider that excuse a ghost of Christmas past.

FDA Defends Plastic Linked To Health Risks

Study Finds Link Between Plastics Chemical, Disease *

Sep 16th, 2008 · Adults with high exposure levels to BPA, a common plastics chemical found in everything from baby bottles to food containers, were more than twice as likely to report having diabetes or heart disease. The study's findings will be discussed at an FDA hearing Tuesday.
