Earlier Eruption Eclipses Destruction of Pompeii **

Mar 8th, 2006 · The Italian city of Pompeii is one of the best-known reminders of how deadly volcanoes can be. Mt. Vesuvius' eruption in 79 A.D. buried the city, entombing many of the dead in casts of hardened ash. Now, scientists say the destruction was even worse in an earlier incident 4,000 years ago.

Oct 23rd, 2004 · American eyes are focused on Mount St. Helens, which may be building toward a new eruption. In Italy, it's only a matter of time before Mount Vesuvius erupts again. But does that mean a new Pompeii? NPR's Scott Simon talks with Haraldur Sigurdsson, a volcano expert and professor of oceanography at University of Rhode Island.
