Nov 12th, 2008 · Sacramento last week elected its first black mayor, former NBA star Kevin Johnson. The 42-year-old businessman beat a two-term incumbent by running on a platform of change. At the same time, the non-profit organization Johnson founded, which works to revitalize poor neighborhoods with charter schools and redevelopment projects, is being investigated for misuse of public funds. Dec 15th, 2005 · Rep. Richard Baker (R-LA) is set to propose legislation that would create a Louisiana Recovery Corporation. The federal agency would purchase damaged or destroyed property from willing sellers, facilitating the redevelopment of areas of Louisiana devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Oct 20th, 2005 · The shopping district of Atlanta's newest redevelopment project opens Thursday: Atlantic Station is built on the site of an old steel mill near downtown. The idea behind the design is New Urbanism, environments where people can live, work and shop in one space. Time will determine whether Atlantic Station fulfills that vision.
