Sep 28th, 2006 · Clay Shaw has represented the Fort Lauderdale area in Congress since 1981. This year he's facing stiff competition from Democratic challenger Ron Klein, who's trying to play up Shaw's ties to President Bush. Klein is also attacking Shaw's record on Medicare.

In the 1930s and '40s, Shaw's band ranked with the Goodman, Dorsey and Miller bands in popularity. But he largely rejected pop tunes and stuck with music by composers like Porter, Gershwin and Berlin. We remember Shaw.

Shaw's recording of "Begin the Beguine" became so popular in 1938 that it brought him to an even footing with the other so-called "King of Swing" -- Benny Goodman.
