Crikey! Here Come the Chavs ***

May 30th, 2006 · Robert Siegel talks with Verity Jennings, a recent graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University in Britain. Jennings' thesis analyzed the popularity of the term "chavs" in hundreds of newspaper stories. While the origins of the word are murky, Jennings says "chavs" has come to refer to British young people characterized by gold jewelry and sportswear, often in a negative light. But she says references to "chavs" may also create a new sense of belonging.

'Fame School' Preps Baseball Rookies for the Bigtime

Future baseball stars learn how to handle the reporters, agents, business managers, fans and sportswear executives who have just begun beating down their doors. Reggae Singers Warned over Anti-Gay Lyrics ***

Aug 20th, 2004 · In the wake of the publicity generated by protests in London and Philadelphia over anti-gay lyrics in the music of Jamaican dancehall star Beenie Man, sportswear manufacturer Puma warned a group of reggae stars performing in a Puma-sponsored Olympics concert that it would pull the plug if they sang homophobic material. One of those singers, Buju Banton, has already had concerts cancelled in Germany, where hate speech laws are strict. RJ Reynolds has bumped Beenie Man from 14 concerts on its Salem "Stir Your Senses" U.S. tour. Joel Rose of member station WHYY reports.
