Feb 13th, 2008 · The fight for Iraq's northern city of Mosul is on. Bolstering 14,000 U.S. troops are 9,000 Iraqis forces, many of them Kurds. But the Sunni Arab community is leery of the Kurds, who hold a majority of seats in the provincial council.
Sep 13th, 2007 · A top leader of the Sunni Arab movement that has been aligned with U.S. forces in Iraq's Anbar province was killed Thursday in a roadside bombing. Sheikh Abdul Sattar Abu Risha was founder of the Anbar Salvation Council, which joined U.S. troops fighting al-Qaida in Iraq last year.
Aug 1st, 2007 · Iraq's largest Sunni Arab political bloc says it will withdraw from the government, threatening Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's efforts to seek reconciliation among the country's rival factions. Meanwhile, at scores are killed and wounded in two separate explosions in Baghdad.
Jun 11th, 2007 · The Iraqi parliament has voted to oust its outspoken speaker. The assembly said the behavior of Mahmoud Mashhadani, a leader of the main Sunni Arab bloc, has been an embarrassment. He frequently engaged in shouting matches with other members of the assembly. Michele Norris talks with NPR's Jamie Tarabay, who is in Baghdad.
Feb 19th, 2007 · In Iraq, Sunni Arab sheiks angry over al Qaida attacks in the insurgent stronghold of Anbar province are urging their tribesmen to join the local police forces. So far, the United States has trained three battalions.
Nov 10th, 2006 · As Iraq's newly empowered Shiite majority struggles to take control of the country, Sunni Arab leaders in other countries with significant Shiite populations have grown increasingly nervous. The Persian Gulf kingdom of Bahrain, for instance, is ruled by a Sunni-led government, despite the island's Shiite Muslim majority.
Sep 18th, 2006 · As sectarian violence rages across much of Iraq, tens of thousands of Arab families are searching for a safe place to live. Notwithstanding decades of Sunni Arab rule over the Kurdish minority, many Arabs are now finding peace and security in Kurdistan, in northern Iraq.
Sep 13th, 2006 · Police find 65 bodies across Baghdad, many in Sunni areas, showing signs of torture. Forty-five of the victims were discovered in predominantly Sunni Arab parts of western Baghdad, and 15 were found in mostly Shiite areas of eastern Baghdad. Meanwhile, mortar attacks, car bombings and shootings left another 30 dead across Iraq.
