Aug 20th, 2004 · On the second-to-last day of swimming at the Olympic Games in Athens, Michael Phelps earned his fifth gold medal and his seventh medal overall. Also, American swimmer Gary Hall Jr. won the 50-meter freestyle sprint by a mere 1/100th of a second. The victory is something of a vindication for Hall, who was upset after being left off the U.S. freestyle relay team earlier this week. NPR's Howard Berkes reports.
