Dec 10th, 2006 · Ruth Johnson Colvin is one of 10 people who will be honored this coming week with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Colvin dedicated her life to literacy in 1962 when she discovered that more than 11,000 people in her hometown of Syracuse, N.Y., functionally couldn't read. It led her to create Literacy Volunteers or America which today has more than 125 affiliates.
