Oct 3rd, 2008 · Current models indicate that the magnetic fields that enclose galaxies grow slowly over billions of years. But scientists have used a telescope to peer back millions of years in time and discovered a distant galaxy with a magnetic field at least 10 times the average strength.

May 21st, 2008 · Astronomers have witnessed for the first time a star at the very moment it exploded as a supernova. This supernova, in a nearby galaxy, produced a burst of X-rays that lasted 10 minutes and signaled the death of the star. Soon, telescopes around the world focused in on this event to capture X-rays, radio waves and visible light from the dying star.

Mar 17th, 2008 · The new Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona weighs 580 tons and is inside a 17-story building on top of an Arizona mountain. It's twice as big as the next largest telescope on Earth, and it has 10 times the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope.

Dec 28th, 2007 · Physicists are using the largest telescope in Antarctica to probe the farthest edges of the universe. South Pole Telescope scientists discuss their 280-ton scope, what they hope it will show them -- and what it's like to live and work on the southernmost continent.

Sep 27th, 2007 · Astronomers have a mystery on their hands, after a radio telescope in Australia detected an extremely brief, but extremely strong, pulse of radio waves. There was just one pulse, but based on its strength and the way the signal arrived at Earth, astronomers estimate it came from something 1 billion light years away. There is only speculation about what the "something" was.

Jul 14th, 2007 · One of the world's largest reflecting telescopes takes its first look at the sky. The Great Canary Telescope sits on a peak on the Atlantic island of La Palma. It's expected to be fully online by 2008. Among the guests at the opening was former Queen guitarist Brian May, who's made a second career for himself as an astrophysicist.
