Nov 19th, 2008 · The United Nations is warning that hundreds of thousands of people in the Gaza Strip face severe shortages of fuel and food because Israel has sealed the borders. Israel allowed a minimal amount of aid into the coastal territory on Monday before reclosing the borders citing Palestinian rocket and mortar fire. The informal truce between Israel and Hamas, which controls Gaza, has all but collapsed. NPR's Eric Westervelt reports.

The two recently released their full-length debut, Rearrange Beds, on which they tackle a simple enough formula: drums, electric guitar, and failed relationships for lyrical fodder. It's dangerous territory for some bands. It's easy to turn those ingredients into melodrama or an exercise in the trite. But An Horse uses its confessional lyrics to create 10 immediately recognizable tunes, with toe-tapping beats. It's a combination that led the duo to opening spots on tours with Death Cab for Cutie and Tegan & Sara.

Nov 7th, 2008 · President-elect Barack Obama promised his little girls a puppy for the White House, but they'll have to get past Barney first. The current White House dog, a Scottish terrier, bit a Reuters reporter Thursday. Jon Decker was trying to pet the usually friendly dog. Barney growled and snapped at his finger. The White House medical staff treated the bleeding finger. Barney held onto his territory, for now.
