Oct 22nd, 2008 · Merck, one of the country's biggest pharmaceutical makers, announced Wednesday it is slashing more than 7,000 positions, or 12 percent of its global workforce. Those cuts come on top of more than 10,000 jobs that were eliminated in an earlier restructuring. The new cuts were announced as the company reported a sharp drop in income for the recent quarter. It's due partly to fewer sales of Merck's cholesterol pills, Vytorin and Zetia.
Oct 22nd, 2008 · Yahoo announced Tuesday it will cut 15,000 people from its workforce as it struggles with plunging profits — a 64 percent drop from the same time last year. Weak ad sales continue to be a key culprit.

However, employers slahed payrolls by 159,000 last month. The biggest losses came in the construction and manufacturing industries.

HP is restructuring as it integrates its newly acquired technology services company Electronic Data Systems Corporation. Most of the job cuts will be EDS workers. HP is reducing its workforce so it can cut costs, and better compete with IBM.
