Shearwater: Tiny Desk Concert

We've come up with many excuses to have artists come in and perform Tiny Desk Concerts at the workspace of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen. Some are too quiet to be well-served by traditional live concerts, while others are little-known staff favorites who wouldn't ordinarily receive a large-scale webcast presentation. Usually, it's just an opportunity to bring in artists who, for one reason or another, haven't gotten as much of our attention as we'd like to give them.

Joanne Brackeen: A Maelstrom On The Keys

To celebrate her July birthday this year, pianist Joanne Brackeen celebrated the musicians that gave her a shot early in her career: Art Blakey, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz. Brackeen unleashes a maelstrom on the keys in a concert recorded at the Jazz Standard by JazzSet.

She was the first African woman to win a Grammy and was affectionately known around the world as "Mama Africa." Host Michel Martin offers a reflection.

Live Monday: Conor Oberst In Concert

Best known as the prolific and gifted frontman for the country-rock band Bright Eyes, Oberst ventured out on his own this summer. He released his first solo album in more than a decade: an eponymous sketchbook of introspective folk and rock, steeped in Americana. The new collection of songs will be the centerpiece of a full concert by Oberst and his backing group, The Mystic Valley Band, webcast live on NPR.org Monday, Nov. 10. The performance will begin online at approximately 10 p.m. ET.

Jim White's Tiny Desk Concert

Jim White is a storyteller first and a musician second. It's a kind of storytelling rooted in his own unusual history: He grew up in Florida in a deeply Pentecostal community and fell in love with the white gospel music he heard. But from there, White took a surprising path to becoming a full-time musician. He was a professional surfer, a boxer, a fashion model in Milan and a cab driver in New York City. White's travels recently took him to Washington, D.C., where he stopped by the offices of NPR Music for this live performance.

Live Friday: The Decemberists In Concert

Two years after releasing one of the best albums of 2006 (The Crane Wife), the band returns with three volumes of new songs. Like much of The Decemberists' earlier work, Always the Bridesmaid: A Singles Series is full of magically inventive, character-driven story-songs rooted in British folk and pop. The Decemberists will showcase the new music, along with old favorites, in a full concert, webcast live on NPR.org Friday, Nov. 7. The performance, from WXPN in Philadelphia, will begin online at approximately 9 p.m. ET.

The Elephant 6 Orchestra In Concert

It was a magical and historic night for indie-rock. For the first time in more than a decade, the founding members of the widely adored and influential Elephant 6 Collective, including Robert Schneider (The Apples in Stereo) and the famously reclusive Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel), took the stage together for a sprawling live performance. The group, which featured 15 artists from 10 different bands, served up more than three hours of joyous, psych-tinged singalongs under the glow of the rainbow-colored lights at Chicago's Bottom Lounge.

Dr. Dog's Tiny Desk Concert

Dr. Dog isn't an obvious choice for one of NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concerts. For one thing, it's a pretty big group, at least for the small space behind Bob Boilen's desk. The band's music can be pretty chaotic — loud and rumbling, with multiple instruments fighting to be heard. And singer Toby Leaman likes to belt out his vocals in a window-rattling, raspy growl.
