Christmas Tree Lights Needs Pedal Power

A Christmas tree in Indiana is powered by alternative energy. The tree is outside Fort Wayne's Embassy Theatre. Its lights connect to a generator, powered by a stationary bike. If the power runs low, an alarm goes off, demanding more exercise. So the tree does nothing to contribute to global warming. Unless you count the carbon dioxide from people panting on the bike.

Will Credit Rating Agencies Be Monitored...

The G-20 last weekend committed to exercising strong oversight of credit rating agencies. Many of the financial instruments that are at the heart of the financial crisis had been given triple-A ratings, meaning they were supposed to be of the highest quality. That turned out to be wrong. Will the G-20 declaration change anything?

An Horse: 'Horizons'

Australians Kate Cooper and Damon Cox make up An Horse. The two recently released their full-length debut, Rearrange Beds, on which they tackle a simple enough formula: drums, electric guitar, and failed relationships for lyrical fodder. It's dangerous territory for some bands. It's easy to turn those ingredients into melodrama or an exercise in the trite. But An Horse uses its confessional lyrics to create 10 immediately recognizable tunes, with toe-tapping beats. It's a combination that led the duo to opening spots on tours with Death Cab for Cutie and Tegan & Sara.
