Final Call: Obama Wins; Dems Gain In Congress

It's hard to imagine a scenario in which Barack Obama doesn't win the White House. By our count, every state John Kerry carried four years ago is in the Obama column today, and he is also ahead in several states that President Bush won. In addition, expect the Democrats to pick up seven seats in the Senate and 17 in the House.

Money Woes Muzzle Independent Political Groups

In a presidential race that seems to include every possible political strategy, one element has barely been visible. There have been no high-impact independent groups like the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the outfit that nearly derailed John Kerry's campaign four years ago.

John McCain's campaign is focusing largely on holding on to states the Republicans won in 2004 under George Bush. But there's one major exception: He's aggressively pursuing Pennsylvania, which voted for John Kerry four years ago.

A Soaring Speech... You Gotta Let It Sink In

Only after time passed did John Kerry's 2004 Democratic acceptance speech where he saluted and said he was "reporting for duty," become one of the most painful moments in political history. The media was mixed on Obama's speech, but how will it play out later? Only time will tell.

FCC Lifts 'Cross-Ownership' Ban Despite Protests

The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday agreed to overturn a 32-year-old ban and allow broadcasters in the country's top 20 media markets to own a TV or radio station and a newspaper in the same market. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin says that when the so-called "cross-ownership" ban was passed, it made sense to try to protect consumers who received most of their news from newspapers and over-the-air TV and radio. Martin pushed the vote through despite opposition on Capitol Hill, including Sens. Trent Lott and John Kerry, and organizations including Code Pink and the National Rifle Association.

Divisions among Democrats take center stage as the Senate debates two Iraq amendments to the defense bill. One, from Sen.
